SPACECRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER

 

Responsible For

To provide space environmental radiation advice, studies and bids support as required from satellite systems level through to components.

 

Key Purpose of Job

To support bid activities and mission/spacecraft level studies for all types of satellites. To perform characterisation of the radiation environment using appropriate software tools and interpret the radiation environment into engineering specifications. You will also be required to direct and support test campaigns on new technologies/devices

 

Key Tasks

Your main tasks will be the characterisation of the radiation environment for mission studies, bids and projects, radiation modelling of the environment both at system level and through the use of sector analysis.  To identify the key radiation effects on the spacecraft for the relevant orbit and to provide support to engineers for selection of EEE technology for the future through radiation analysis and tests. You will provide recommendations and direction relating to radiation test planning, test support, test results interpretation and knowledge management, and update and maintain the radiation test database Other tasks include examining in-orbit assets to support understanding of component / unit behaviour in the space environment and to support production of guidelines for engineers for different radiation environments, parts selection approach.  You will be interfacing with projects, system, subsystem and unit engineers as appropriate throughout

 

Qualifications

You will require an Engineering or Physics degree or equivalent.

 

Experience

Appropriate experience in the space field. System level and component engineering experience is desirable

 

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of spacecraft the environment and systems engineering together with knowledge of radiation effects in components/component engineering.  You will have experience with 3-D modelling software and SPENVIS, DOSRAD, FASTRAD.  Experience with TID, SEL (including laser screening) testing is preferred.  You will have excellent verbal communication skills, together with excellent writing skills with a proven ability to generate high quality technical documentation. A good knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint is required as is a proven ability to deliver solutions under pressure and to tight timescales.
